La Dolce Vita: At the Crossroads of Italian Classical Folk Traditions
with Daniela Pierson, baroque violin

October 6, 2007 - 8:00pm: Synod Hall, Oakland
October 7, 2007 - 2:30pm: McClintic Hall, Calvary Episcopal Church, Shadyside

From the popular sounds of the "Tarantella San Michele," "Tammouriatta," and other earthy and familiar Italian tunes to the compositions of Castello, Uccellini, Marini, and Corelli, Italian Baroque meets Italian folk music for the best of both worlds! This concert traces (in part) the sweet life of the violin in Italy, from a lowly tavern instrument to the bella figura it has become.

Bohemian Rhapsody: Eastern European Elegance
with Barry Bauguess, baroque trumpet, and Webb Wiggins, chamber organ

December 8, 2007 - 8:00pm: Synod Hall, Oakland
December 9, 2007 - 2:30pm: Laughlin Music Center, Chatham University, Shadyside

"Scaramouche, Scaramouche, will you do the fandango?" No, not that Bohemian Rhapsody. Our Emily Norman Davidson Memorial Concert, an eclectic program of Eastern European enticements from Poland, Moravia, Silesia, and elsewhere, will feature the popular "Trumpeter of Krakow" and showcase the light attack and warm tones of one of North America's premier trumpeters. With additional works by Biber, Schmelzer, and Vejvanovský, this performance will be fit for a queen (if not, perhaps, for the rock band Queen‹sorry, no fandangos).

Journeys: Sounds of the Jewish Diaspora
with Anna Levenstein, soprano, and Danny Mallon, percussion

February 16, 2008 - 8:00pm: Synod Hall, Oakland
February 17, 2008 - 2:30pm: Levy Hall, Temple Rodef Shalom, Oakland

Fiddler-on-the-roof meets Españoleta! If there's any place this season for something like a fandango, perhaps it is here, as the intrepid trio is joined by two internationally acclaimed guests to perform Sephardic music from Spain and Morocco as well as Ashkenazi music from Eastern Europe. These rich musical traditions abound with popular and recognizable themes. Julie won't be on the roof, but she just might bring the house down! Sunday's post-concert reception to be held in the beautiful Aaron Courtyard

Airing It Out & Keeping It Reel: St. Paddy's Delight
with Alison Melville, recorder and baroque flute

March 15, 2008 - 8:00pm: Synod Hall, Oakland
March 16, 2008 - 2:30pm: Laughlin Music Center, Chatham University, Shadyside

One of North America's leading performers on recorder and historical flutes unites her talent with Chatham Baroque for a lively set of traditional and classical Celtic melodies. This program of reels, airs, and jigs by Scottish and Irish composers, including Oswald and Carolan, will set your toes to tappin' and fill you with the spirit of St. Patrick's Day!

St. Stanislaus Church

Join us afterwards for pierogies, beer and more at the Church Brew Works.

The Mattress Factory
March 14, 2008 - 8:00pm

Everyone knows that Harp goes with Guinness, but Chatham Baroque intends to prove that theorbo, viola da gamba, violin, and flutes go just as well with a perfectly-drawn pint. Help us celebrate St. Paddy's day early on the North Side with a performance of Airing It Out & Keeping It Reel, followed by a reception featuring Guinness, Harp, and substantial munchies, catered by Coca Café. Mattress Factory art galleries open at at 7:00 p.m. for viewing. You won't want to miss this reel-y great scene!

Come a-roving with us to these exciting locations!

Additional Concerts and Events

Masters of Innovation
Friday, November 9, 2007 - 8:00pm, Presbyterian Church, Sewickley

The palette of sounds and musical ideas that we now consider "baroque" emerged in the seventeenth century. Chatham Baroque will explore the development of this innovative sound from Italy to France to Austria and Spain, through the baroque blockbusters of such masters as Corelli, Marais, Castello, Schmelzer, Kapsberger, Sanz, and others, including the great one himself, J.S. Bach.

Music of Love & War
A Collaboration with the Pittsburgh Opera Center

February 9, 2008

Last year's wildly successful collaboration on Ormindo was so much fun that Chatham Baroque will join forces with singers from the Pittsburgh Opera Center once again, this time to perform the music of Claudio Monteverdi and John Dowland. The torments of love and war, expressed in solos, duets, madrigals, lute songs, and more, have never sounded so sweet!
