Music from Andalusia, the Ottoman Empire, North Africa, and the Sephardic Diaspora
East of the River performs music from Jewish and Ottoman traditions of the 13th through 18th centuries. Listeners will hear Hebrew, Arabic, and Ladino (Medieval Judaeo-Spanish) in this program consisting of songs and dances from liturgical and folk traditions, and will hear examples of classical instrumental music from the Ottoman court as well. These various types of music aren’t built with Western musical conventions, but rather, use the system of microtonal melodic modes referred to as the Arabic makam. The concerts will be held at Hicks Memorial Chapel on the campus of Pittsburgh Theological Seminary, home of the Kelso Museum of Near Eastern Archaeology. The museum will be open from 1-4:30 PM and will feature a special display (details below).

Lecture and Q&A (3-4 PM, John Knox Room in Long Hall)
East of the River’s Nina Stern, Daphna Mor, and Ronnie Malley will conduct this program entitled, “Creating the Hamsa Program: Jewish Liturgy and Folk Songs, Ottoman Music, Instrumentation and Musical Arrangements.” Registration not necessary but appreciated.
Barbour Library (10 AM – 2 PM; Guided Tour at 12:30pm)
The Seminary’s Barbour Library will be open from 10 AM to 2 PM. Capacity for the guided tour is limited to 20 people. Tour admission without registration is on a first come, first serve basis.
Kelso Museum of Near Eastern Archaeology (1pm-4:30pm; Long Hall ground floor)
Especially for the East of the River program, museum staff have created a special display of ancient coins from several centuries of the Ottoman Empire as well as Jewish coins dating back to the First Revolt against Rome in the first century CE. Capacity at the Kelso Museum is limited to 20 people per half hour time slot. Admission without registration is on a first come, first serve basis.
