Music of Nicola Matteis

As a performer, the Italian violinist Nicola Matteis was admired for his ability to work “wonders upon a note.” As a person, however, Matteis was awkward and excessively proud –– perhaps even arrogant and anti-social –– traits that hindered his advancement in his adopted country of England. He was a virtuoso violinist, composer of considerable skill and charm, guitarist, and author of an important treatise on continuo playing on the guitar. He also represented the first wave of Italian virtuoso musicians and composers who would come to dominate England in the early eighteenth century.
