The ensemble covers early innovators for our instruments, Diego Ortiz and Giovanni Kapsperger, the 17th-century modern style of Dario Castello and Isabella Leonarda, the florid fantastic style of Antonio Bertali and Heinrich Schmelzer. The program also includes the poignant 21st century work “for Emily” by Pittsburgh composer, David Stock, which was composed especially for Chatham Baroque in memory of its founding violinist, Emily Norman Davidson.

Join in the Maxo Vanka Murals Tour and Conservation Talk
Arrive at 6 PM to enjoy an introduction to the awe-inspiring murals of Croatian artist Maxo Vanka at the historic St. Nicholas Croatian Catholic Church in Millvale before the Art of the Trio concert. Discover how these striking works, painted by Vanka in 1937 and 1941, reflect their social and historical context, and the culture and lives of the working-class immigrant congregation. A Vanka Murals conservator will also be on hand to talk about current conservation efforts and the challenges and discoveries the team is making up on the scaffold.

Repertoire to include:

  • Sonata Prima from Sonatae Concertate in stil moderno – Dario Castello
  • Toccata No. 9 in A Minor– Giovanni Girolamo Kapsperger
  • Sonata duodecima – Isabella Leonarda

For their annual Art of the Trio concert, Chatham Baroque’s Andrew Fouts (violin), Patricia Halverson  (viola da gamba), and Scott Pauley (theorbo) remind you that all music was once new music. The trio explores the idea of modern music for their instruments – violin, viola da gamba, and theorbo – from the 16th, 17th, and 21st centuries.
