About Elm Court
Elm Court is a private 40-room residence designed in the Elizabethan-Tudor-Gothic style by Pittsburgh architect, Benno Janssen. The house was commissioned by Benjamin D. Phillips, then president of the T.W. Phillips Gas & Oil Co. and built in 1928-1931 Elm Court was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1979 and remained in the extended Phillips family until 1983. It was then acquired by philanthropist and collector, Frederick R. Koch who began a 10+ year restoration and expansion of the house. The estate is sited on a hilly 16-acre park designed to make use of the property’s natural contours. A series of interlocking paths, terraces, and fountains overlook the landscape and are dominant design elements.
