The Three Violins

Boasting three virtuoso violinists with three distinct yet complementary musical personalities, Chatham Baroque dives into the rarely-performed repertoire of Baroque music for three violins and continuo. Hear the music of Marini, Fonatana, Schmelzer, and Purcell, as well as duos for the unusual combination of theorbo and tiorbino by Castaldi. Stealing the show is one of the most famous Baroque pieces of all time: Johann Pachelbel’s Canon in D.

No Holds Barred

Stylus Fantasticus Sonatas and Suites of Biber, Schmelzer, Bertali & Schein

The title of the program, “No Holds Barred,” is our somewhat modern take on the artistically free and emotionally unrestrained, bound-to-nothing qualities of the music of the stylus fantasticus, or “fantastic style.” We include works by the most famous violinist-composers of the seventeenth-century, including Bertali, Schmelzer, and Biber

The rich, full sound of our ensemble of 6 to 8 strings, and a rich continuo section of organ, theorbo, and violone, will transport you back to the courts and cathedrals of Salzburg and Vienna.

EspañoletaNell Snaidas

Sol y Sombra

Drawing on many years of experience performing Baroque music from Spain and Latin America, including two ground breaking CDs, Sol y Sombra, and Españoleta, Chatham Baroque heightens the contrasts between the sacred and secular musical traditions. On the one hand was the sol: the bright, joyful, festive dances. On the other hand was sombra: the darker, mystical, liturgical and devotional music. Sol y Sombra is offered as an instrumental-only program or with the addition of long-time collaborators, Nell Snaidas (soprano) or José Lemos (countertenor).

Handel’s Gloria

Celebrating the Divine in Baroque Italy

This holiday concert explores George Frideric Handel and the Italian influences that shaped him. Major works include Handel’s exuberant and virtuosic Gloria; Alessandro Scarlatti’s tender Christmas cantata, O di Betlemme altera; and sacred songs from Claudio Monteverdi’s collection, Selva morale e spirituale. Rounding out the program are instrumental sonatas and dances by Vivaldi and Kapsperger.

Note: This program can be adapted to fit any season of the year!
